The Russell Beach Home

Refined Floor Plan
To practice the design process, I was given specific criteria and preferences of the Russell Family. I then created a bubble diagram, blocking plan, preliminary floor plan, and refined floor plan of a beach home. Drafted in AutoCAD
Loose Floor Plan
In this plan, I started to experiment with square footage in each room. The limit was 2400 square feet. Drafted in AutoCAD.

Bubble Diagram
& Block Plan
Based on the given criteria, I started forming the general size and location of each room. I considered sunlight and the ocean view when choosing the location and orientation of each room. I wanted the patio and art studio to have a nice view of the ocean for relaxation and inspiration. Illustrated in Procreate.

Library
This illustration depicts a seating area in the library to represent a space designed with good privacy. This space is situated away from the main traffic and circulation patterns. The rows of bookshelves act as partitions, making the area feel less open. It is an ideal place for studying, especially for those who prefer a quieter environment while still enjoying comfort.

The Link
This drawing represents the concept of layering because multiple different spaces can be viewed simultaneously. To the left is a vending machine area, a small seating area is on the right, and a large common area is straight ahead. Additionally, the flooring pattern guides people through the active spaces.
College Dorm
This sketch of a college dorm room represents two types of spatial interaction: sociofugal and sociopetal. The two beds on opposite sides of the room discourage interaction (sociofugal) as beds are very personal and territorial. In contrast, the futon in the center encourages interaction (sociopetal) because it offers a communal space for friends to chat and relax, making it less territorial than a bed.

Waiting Room
Based on the given bubble diagram, I created two different fully furnished loose plans of a waiting room.
Wasted Space
For each of the three office areas, I proposed two different ways to remove unnecessary corridors and wasted space. The original floor plans of each space are shown faintly underneath.

Office
This office design is based on a required number of offices, square footage, furniture, and lounge areas for a certain number of people.
Furniture Scale
To practice space planning with furniture in proper scale, I proposed a functional layout for the bedroom and living room with the provided furniture.

Grid Challenge
Based on a given grid, I fit each required room size and a seating area in the lower right corner.
Bubble to Loose Plan
Based on the given bubble diagram, I created a block plan, and then a fully furnished loose floor plan.

Hotel Lobby
Using the given seating options, I provided as much seating as possible for the hotel lobby. The blue arrows show the circulation patterns.
